Airport information
YOU DO NOT NEED TO CHECK IN EARLY. Joshua will check everyone in.
YOU DO NOT NEED A TICKET before you get to the airport. When you get to the airport, go inside the airport, go to the CONTINENTAL AIRLINES desk with your ID, and they will check you in, and check your bags. They will give you a ticket there and at the same time, you can check your bags.
Joshua is making sure H & K get to sit together. Mom has been upgraded to business class per her special request (lucky dog!).

Mmmmm, Maui Munchies!
We hope you are enjoying your "Maui Revealed" books! Your book will give you great food recommendations. Restaurants marked with "ONO" in the book mean that these restaurants have earned the author's high praise. We'll primarily be staying in these two places:
-- Wailea area - South Maui (generally p.127-137 / restaurants start p.264)
-- Lahaina area - West Maui (generally p.44-64 / restaurants start p.252)
Maui has some of the most delicious foods we have ever tasted. Prepare your taste buds for some of these places:
In Wailea
The Grand Wailea has an awesome sunrise breakfast/brunch you will want to bring an appetite for. Don't let me forget to make reservations. Check out the menu:
http://wailearesortdining.com/grand_dining/
Sunrise Family Buffet - 28
Continental Buffet - 22
Sansei Seafood & Sushi (page 270) - the best seafood and sushi I have ever eaten. They also have treats for the non-sushi / seafood eaters. After 10 p.m., they have an awesome happy hour w/ 1/2 price options. http://www.sanseihawaii.com
Da Kitchen (p. 271) http://www.da-kitchen.com/ Awesome local Maui food, teriyaki chicken, kalua pork - spectac! I may go there every day we are in Wailea. Awesome.
In Lahaina
When we get to Lahaina, we will go to the local grocery store in order to save some cash. Dining in Maui can be expensive, so don't plan on eating out at every meal. Load up on granola bars, bread, fruit, crackers, etc. that we can keep in our rooms. We also have mini-fridges in our rooms so you can keep sandwich meat, cokes, milk, etc. We'll also likely need to hit the beverage store so you don't blow your dining budget on the $12 pool side drinks, though they are delicious.
Check out pages 260-261 for the West Maui Local cuisine recommendations and 262 for the West Maui Pacific Rim recommendations, all with ONO ratings. These sound awesome!
Also the Royal Lahaina breakfast buffet is out of control yummy! $20 / person. Check out the menu here:
http://www.royallahainaresort.net/Royal-Lahaina/Documents/DTBMenu/ROTBreakfast.pdf
Yall will love it. Don't plan on going to your chain restaurants like BJ's, Melting Pot, Chili's, etc. Those are all available back at home. Plan on trying new cuisine with names you can barely pronounce. You won't be disappointed!

The Royal Lahaina
After spending two nights at The Grand Wailea, we will travel to Lahaina, located on the side of the island that looks like a fish tail. There we will spend the next four nights at the Royal Lahaina Resort.
Here is the website link: http://www.royallahainaresort.net
We'll be staying in four rooms in the family sized cottages that speckle the resort gardens. Walk down the cottage trail to the main hotel corridor for food, or to the ocean side pool for snuba lessons, or to the beach. No, I did not misspell scuba. "Snuba" is a scuba snorkeling hybrid that an "80s fabulous Hawaii 5-0" instructor will inevitably convince you to try in the hotel pool.
Set your own schedule in the next four days depending on your desired activity level. After a walk along the neighboring golf course every morning, you will find me on the beach with a book. You will see Joshua's back as he snorkels the day away. Snorkel alongside endangered turtles, hundreds of tropical fish, and beautiful coral. This snorkeling spot is one of the best on the island, and is directly adjacent to the hotel. If you are truly brave, jump from a 40 foot high cliff into the ocean!
Lahaina neighbors Kaanapali, a bustling area of fun-potential: shopping, dining, fishing excursions, surfing lessons, advertisements for tourist geared luaus, and opportunities for listening to time-shares (excursion discounts). Escape on a day trip to enjoy Maui's many waterfalls and bamboo forests.
There are so many different activities. The resort offers catamaran cruises, or can help you reserve the following:
- Reserve Helicopter Tours
- Whale-Watching Cruises
- Parasailing
- Snorkeling and Scuba Excursions
- Sightseeing
Save money by keeping some grocery items in your cottage mini-fridge and make a picnic lunch and beverage for the beach. But, there are spectacular local foodie spots that we have to try. We will also want to enjoy at least one buffet style breakfast at the resort - soooo delicious!
You will love the Royal Lahaina's laid back atmosphere. Whatever activity you chose, its impossible not to enjoy yourself in Maui

The Grand Wailea
Let's get to know the island. Imagine that the island is shaped like a goldfish. Haleakala is on the body of the fish, or larger part of the island. Our airport is located on the north side, where the body is connected to the tail. Wailea is located near the rear belly of the fish. And our final hotel in Lahaina is located on the tail fin. Click the above map to enlarge.
After viewing the spectacular sunrise atop Haleakala, we will drive back to our hotel near the airport, and then drive south to Wailea, to the second most highly rated resort in the world. The Grand Wailea brings heaven to earth. The resort is paradise.
Our two night stay at The Grand will be unforgettable. The grounds are spectacular. Without spoiling it, check out the website for some sights you can expect to see.
http://www.grandwailea.com
Alternatively, watch this slightly cheesy you tube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=majelvsPnBI&feature=related
Walk out from the hotel and directly onto the beach. Take a walk along the shore, and see the grounds of one luxurious resort after another. Grab a chair and sit on the beach with a book and a beverage.
The waterpark on the resort grounds is fun for everyone. You will find water slides, lazy rivers, beverage services in the pool, caves, and water activities. Pool side food and beverage service is a little pricey, but convenient.
The spa is one of the top rated in the world. In the buff, or in a suit, soak in a seaweed bath or massage your muscles with one of the high pressure shower features. Get your blood circulating by dipping from a pool of steaming hot water to a bath of chilling cold water. Attendants will offer you cucumbers for your eyes, an apple for hydration, or a cool cloth for the steam or dry rooms. Wrap yourself in a fluffy white robe and sit on the balcony as you await a massage. The money is well spent, but start saving now.
For an extra special treat, work up an appetite for the ultra extravagant brunch. You will find all the culinary breakfast treats you crave and the island's most succulent fruit. Save your money for this one, too.
A striking difference from Texas you may recognize: nearly all hotels are open to the outside. You do not have to open a door to get to the lobby or to walk out onto the grounds. Because the weather is always heavenly perfect, most buildings are open air.
Joshua and I captured these pictures when we last visited The Grand Wailea:
Haleakala
We will wake hours before sunrise the first morning in Maui to view one of the most spectacular sights on the Pacific Ocean. We will get up around 4 a.m. Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time, though it will feel like 9 a.m. Texas time. We will put on as many layers as we have, pack our cameras and some cash for the National Park entrance fee, take the covers off of the hotel beds, and pack into the rental cars. We'll get breakfast at the only place that's open, the local Denny's, and make the assent up the volcano.
Winding turns 45 degrees up a volcano are thrilling (and a little scary) at 5 a.m. in the pitch black morning. There are no city lights to illuminate the road. We will be in two cars, so hopefully the boys won't try to outdo each other in their turning prowess. Roll up your car windows after you have smelled the sweet pineapple fields and sugar cane because the temperature drops dramatically as we ascend the volcano.
We have finally arrived at the top. It's very cold, so wrap yourself in your bed linens and venture to the viewing deck. There is still 30 minutes before sunrise. You look out past the rocky peaks. What is that? Water? You look closer, and realize you are not looking out at water. You are looking out at clouds - you are standing above the clouds.
In the next 30 minutes, you will see a beautiful day born with one of the most spectacular sunrises. It's perfect. It's breathtaking. It's unforgettable.
This is the perfect start to a perfect vacation.

You are also going to need to practice saying the name of this national park, because you are going to want to tell everyone about it. Here is my basic tutorial on how to pronounce Haleakala:
Say it with me, Ha - lay - ah - kah - la
